20th April 2022

Finally asphalt ... after 350km on dirt road. Driving on asphalt feels like gliding over the snow! says Tristan.

Milparinka

Milparinka is a small ghost town only 30km south of Tibooburra. Here a small town arose when gold was found in the region. Not the gold itself but water required to wash the gold was located here. A court house and police station with jail are witnesses of the late 19th century.

Packsaddle

The only stop on the Silver City Highway between Tibooburra and Broken Hill. This roadhouse feels like a fresh oasis after some days in the dust. Hundreds of potplants, shower and toilets, and every space decorated with love. The old saddles, boots on the walls make us really feel like somewhere in the far far west. The food is excellent, the kids discover a new favourite: sheppards pie, with beef below and mashed patatoos on top. We take our time and let the kids enjoy the colourful playground in the middle of nowhere, while sipping from our coffee.

Mutawinji National Park

To get to Mutawinji National Park we leave Silver City Highway, and have still 85km of dust road ahead of us. Sun is setting soon, and beautiful colours accompanies us all the way down to Mutawinji. Look for the kangaroo...

By the time we get there it is almost dark. We set tents the tents while the kids play with the dust. After pasta with pesto we enjoy the luxury of a (not hot) shower.

In the early morning the cockatoos and pink galas crie out loud. Sunrise is beautiful....!

A decent breakfast, packing again, ... we walk through the gorges to admire the more testimonies from the Bakantji people living here 20000 years ago.

An indigenous man invite us on a tour to show us native plants and traditions. I would love to! Unfortunately we can`t stay the full day. A very good reason to come back for longer period and take the time to learn and see more of aborigingal culture. Anyone who wants to join us on the next trip the Outback?
