A Welcome to Country is a ritual or formal ceremony performed as a land acknowledgement at many events held in Australia. It is intended to highlight the cultural significance of the surrounding area to a particular Aboriginal clan or language group who are recognised as traditional owners of the land. The Welcome must be performed by a recognised elder of the group.
Welcome to Country enables the Traditional Custodians to give their blessing to the event and is an important mark of respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as Australia’s original inhabitants.
Today 3 June 2022 a recognised elder of the Gadigal people performed a smoking ceremony for the commencement of our exciting new project AXIS Alexandria. A smoking ceremony is an ancient and contemporary custom that involves smouldering native plants to produce smoke. This herbal smoke is believed to have both spiritual and physical cleansing properties, as well as the ability to ward off bad spirits.
Exactly what we need before starting the ever challenging construction process of a new project. Listing to this moving indigenous music .....
Everyone present walked towards the smoke and had the chance to bath his/her body and soul in the smoke for a cleansing and afterwards we walked the bucket of smoking gum tree leaves through our site shed offices.
Both BESIX Watpac and Goodmans project teams and senior management gathered on site for the Welcome to Country. Here some impressions:
Now all is good to start the works. The piling is rig is ready and foundation works start as of Monday. This project is my baby for the 12 months to come!
Next generation industrial estate Axis Alexandria is a next-generation industrial facility prominently located at the interchange of the M8 Motorway tunnel in South Sydney.
This 1.69 hectare brownfield development will incorporate an architecturally designed, multi-storey industrial facility with flexible units from 1,000–7,000 sqm in one of Sydney’s most important industrial precincts.
Veel succes! 😘
